Welcome to Second Grade!

Summer Work for Incoming Second Graders
Second Grade Summer Work

Dear incoming second grade students and parents,

Over the summer it is important for the students to continue practicing and applying the skills learned in first grade. Practice over the summer will lead to a well-prepared second grader in the fall!! Below you will find required summer work, along with suggested skills review. If you have any questions, please email me at deane.kristen@gmail.com . I look forward to meeting all of you in the fall!

Basic Skills-Required

● Be able to write your first and last name correctly using
appropriate capital and upper-case letters
● Be able to recite your address and phone number
● Be able to tie your shoes

Reading-Required

Researchers have found that children, who do not read over the summer, lose up to six weeks of growth from the school year.

I encourage you to read often with your child. Allow your child to read to you but you should also read to them. It is important for a developing reader to hear what a fluent reader sounds like. Remember, the opportunity for reading does not have to be set aside time each day. Instead, use environmental print as a way to practice reading. Possible environmental print material includes reading cereal boxes, food labels, restaurant menus, and traffic signs. It’s important for your child to develop a love of reading. Let’s begin now by making reading a hobby your child enjoys!

● Students must read for 20 minutes five days a week.
● Students must fill out a reading log and complete one book
report. The book report can be written on a book of the
student’s choice.
● The reading log and book report came home in the student's 4th quarter report card envelope at the end of 1st grade. If you have misplaced this please email me (deane.kristen@gmail.com) and I will send you a new one. You will have to make multiple copies of the reading log.
● Check out Border’s summer incentive to get kids reading! (Optional)

*Reading log and one book report are due the first day of school

Math-Required Skills

Students need to know the following Math skills at the beginning of second grade:

● Addition facts to 18
● How to tell time on an analog clock. Students need to know the
difference between the minute and hour hand. They should also be
able to tell time to the hour and half hour
● Be able to identify a penny, nickel, dime and quarter. Know the
value of each of these coins.
● Be able to count by 2s, 5s, and 10s
● Have an understanding of the following place values: ones and
tens

November/December
Act of Contrition
My God,
I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against you
who I should love above all things.
I firmly intend with your help,
to do penance,
to sin no more,
and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior Jesus Christ
suffered and died for us.
In his name, my God, have mercy.

Examination of Conscience and Form of Confession
*These are both explained in detail in the 2nd Grade prayer book.

~Please continue to send in Box Tops for Education, Project A+ Labels from Tysons Project A+ Products, and Campbell's Labels for Education~

I encourage each student heading up to third grade to continue using the multiplication websites to practice their facts. The more the students practice the more automatic the answers will become. A strong memorization of the facts now will greatly benefit the students next year.
